Heavy Duty Towing



When the vehicle or item needing to be moved weighs over 17,000 pounds, it is considered heavy duty. Complicated recovery mission involving high leverage situations or large amounts of resistance (like submerged vehicles or cliff side situations) may also require equipment rated heavy duty.

What happens if a towing vehicles attempts feats that exceed what it is rated for?

Towing beyond the limits is illegal for good reason. In Colorado is fined heavily and licenses can be docked.

Vehicle is Considered Unsafe to Drive:
If the vehicle has been in a crash or is in an unsafe condition it may be towed because there is no alternative way to move the car (out of the road or parking spot). Police access the damage to a vehicle. Things they look for include:

- Tire and wheel damage. Especially ball joints.
- Broken Brake lines, discs, drums, or calipers.

- broken mirrors. (temporarily driving without passenger side mirror is usually permitted)

Vehicle is illegally parked:
Whether you have a good excuse or not, if you vehicle is illegally parked, it may be towed to the local impound or booted. Alternatively, you may find a fine sent to you without your car being towed.
To avoid troubles with parking, look for signs, and understand them. Set alarms to be ready to move your car before time expires. Learn about municipal parking laws in your area because some areas have generalized rules for the town that may not be known from local signage. 

Owner/Driver of Vehicle has been taken into custody/arrested:
If a vehicle is parked somewhere that is not private property of the driver, it may towed once identified as belonging to someone in custody. It may also be identified as abandoned. If the owner's license is invalid then it may be towed as well. 

Vehicle considered abandoned:

The DMV of Colorado consider a vehicle abandoned on public property when "left unattended on public property for a period of 48 hours or longer, left unattended on public property for a period longer than any limit prescribed by any local ordinance or stored in an impound lot at the request of a law enforcement agency and not removed from the impound lot within 72 hours after the time the law enforcement agency notifies the owner that the vehicle is available for release.”

Impound fees accrue daily and if the car is not claimed with fees paid within 30 days, it will be sold at auction to the highest bidder or scrapped at the recycling yard. 

State Troopers that notice a suspected abandoned vehicle will usually leave an orange notice attached to the car that will read “Pursuant to Colorado law, any motor vehicle left unattended on public property, including any portion of a highway right-of-way, for a period of 48-hours or longer will be deemed abandoned. This vehicle will be towed, at owner expense, if it is not removed by the date and time shown below.”
